I have just learned that on May 18 Shri K. Pattabhi Jois died. He introduced ashtanga yoga to the West in the 1970s. If you have heard of the “primary series” or “mysore style yoga,” you have Pattabhi Jois to thank. Yoga styles such as “flow” or vinyasa yoga as well as power yoga have ashtanga as their inspiration. His students referred to him as Guruji, meaning great teacher. I never had a chance to study under Pattabhi Jois, but he is a teacher of my teachers and I acknowledge the contributions of his life.
